<itunes:summary>Guest: Nathalie Thandiwe
Book: The Yummi Cookbook: Healthy, Delicious, Affordable Food without Meat, Dairy, Wheat or Soy & Nut Free
I think during my third year of medical school I realized I could not be a mainstream doctor. I watched the treatment that people received in the hospital and not that it was bad but as a student we were required to take a history and physical from many patients on the wards. I realized that the pharmaceutical prescriptions being given by well meaning doctors were not really going to address the problems that people had. When I looked into psychiatry and spent my summer after my first year in medical school at a community health center I became alarmed at the drugs being prescribed. I voiced this to the head psychiatrist at this clinic in New Haven who told me that I was a fool for not wanting to get on the drug bandwagon. I don’t remember what my reaction was at the time but I guess you could say that I was more disturbed by what I saw happening in the clinic than his comments to me. I was a vegan during my medical school years and many years after. And of course through that filter all of my patients appeared to be suffering from the effects of meat eating and the toxic chemicals that were added to the food.

I was a vegan for about 22 years. Along the way I realized some things about my own diet that were problematic for both myself and my family. My motivation to maintain this dietary approach had been sustained because most of what I was seeing in the hospital and private practice had to with bodies being destroyed by what was going in the mouth and indeed what was not coming out. When I expanded this model to include spirit, mind, and mechanism I began to feel like I was on the right track although I had to go outside of modern medicine for diagnostic techniques and therapeutics. While I was learning other healing arts the food industry was changing even more. I began to lose my motivation for a vegan diet which truth be told was largely soy based. I also had watched the American public shift to a largely carbohydrate based diet with an emphasis on low fat. With this I have witnessed the devastating consequences with respect to the increasing incidence of obesity and diabetes. I have witnessed a charade being carried on about cholesterol and became aware of the food and pharmaceutical industry’s role in coopting the medical profession to push an agenda that has more to do with profits and their products than the health of the American public. I have witnessed a major transfer of wealth in this country with the American public left holding the bag and in dealing with my own finances finding that for a short period of time I a health professional could not afford health insurance.
For years I left the dietary aspect to the able hands of other people in my practice because the information was like shifting sands. While doctors are really the last source of information to be relied on for nutrition most other people involved in this industry seemed to be pushing products. And then in 2005 I met my wife and partner who was attending a film lecture I was giving at the Open Center. As we began to hang out I would compare what I was eating to what she was eating and realized that even though she would eat meat her diet was much better than mine with respect to nutrient density and unwanted calories. I know she was challenged to prepare food for me and my kids because of how vegetarian orientation. Actually my teenagers were already flexing their free choice genes and were eating things that were not served at home. As for myself I am not a beast person. I have watched how fish have raised the level of mercury in my system and the bodies of many of my patients. My wife has also reminded me that older people on animal based diets do not fair that well. Well with my wife’s cooking I have adjusted to more beans in my diet. We also do more raw food. And with one[...]</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This is a two hour presentation in a special edition of the Global Medicine Review in WBAI’s fall fundraiser. Dr Kokayi interviews Sally Fallon Morell, President of the Weston A Price Foundation. Excerpts from Ms Fallon’s DVD the Oiling of America are played, highlighting the manner in which the vegetable oil industry has hijacked the mainstream medical intelligencia into manipulating data concerning the danger of animal fats and cholesterol to human health. The interview and DVD look at the history of the American diet since the turn of the century, going back to a time when animal fat was in just about everything yet there were was virtually no cardiovascular disease. The food supply was altered with the introduction of cheap polyunsaturated vegetable oils and the American diet was changed forever, coincident with the rise of cardiovascular disease. The documentation concerning cholesterol’s non role in the generation of heart disease is reviewed and much of it is an analysis of same data that was generated in the major lipid studies. The role of the vegetable oil industry in manipulating the AHA and AMA and FDA and the public is documented as well as its role in suppressing decenting research.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Today we are going to hear from the founder of the American Botanical Council, Mark Blumenthal so that we can get a better understanding of the botanical world and the world of plant medicines from the perspective of an organization that provides educational opportunities and helps to disseminate information about botanicals, appreciating them in their cultural/geographic environment as well as their medicinal qualities. All of these are of course related.
Plant medicines are all around us but in large measure we ignore and under appreciate them. There is a saying to the effect that a weed is a medicinal plant whose value has not been discovered. Even our kitchen cooking herbs and spices are underutilized with respect to their medicinal qualities. Yet we all complain about the side effects associated with pharmaceuticals and many of us are not motivated enough to do some herbal 101 work. On the other hand health professions have to be high on the list of people looking for a second career with a willingness to go back to get another degree or some recognized license. Why not herbal medicine. Unlike much of what goes on with pharmaceutical medicines plant medicines do heal and would be particularly useful for chronic health concerns.

Too often would be health care aspirants are disappointed when they experience the level of business that is involved in delivering health care. Insurance companies and pharmaceuticals have gotten in the way of our health care. But isn’t the only real role for an insurance company to make sure that your medical services are covered. They really have no other value and now they are getting in the way of their prime directive…of helping people take care of themselves. They should have no life other than making patient care a reality. They don’t need to be profitable.
And then there is Big Pharma. Pharmaceuticals depend on the plant world to source medicines and ideas for medicines. But in many ways our dependence on them has taken us away from nature’s healing laboratory . To really appreciate plants its useful to check them out in their natural habitat as opposed to the capsule in the bottle that you purchase from the health food store or a journal article. Natural habitat includes the understanding that uses of botanical are cultural applications, technologies…any medical system is a cultural application. Who are the people that came up with the application? What are their circumstance? The botanical also exists in a unique physical environment and it use can vary from one geographic location to another. Indeed the stories and lore around plants can be very informative with respect to their uses. You’ll find the same species of plant used differently by different cultures. Different parts used,
different preparations. Wouldn’t it be better to have the cultural systems of the world share their wisdom and knowledge in the context of appreciation and reciprocity than the kind of rape that is taking place at this time. The profit incentive has no place in the medical field ….friendly competition with respect to healing people with the reward of recognition..like a martial arts master if you will, with the further reward of teaching other practitioners how you did it. But then we would have to live in an entirely different society and those who are profiting now would scream how un American this is. That’s alright …this is to be expected. It goes hand in hand with this kind of corporate disease an infestation that is plaguing our society. And while we can’t ignore the rules of engagement with respect to how things presently operate we can as a first step imagine something different for ourselves, our children and the future of
this planet.
Science ultimately means to know and the way cultures around the planet have come to appreciate their relationship to botanicals ranges from the most spiritual to the most mundane trial and error biochemical approaches. [...]</itunes:summary>

The US patent office has patented human , animal, and plant genes, and entire animals. By patenting a plant and the pollen from that plant blows in your field you can be sued for having these genetically engineered products on your property. Genetically engineered companies are buying up all of the world’s seeds. Moreover these seeds are programmed to need the pesticides being produced by theses multinationals. The book Your Right to Know focuses on the crisis in finding healthy food and looks at the corporate superstructure in detail. Progress is being made in companies not buying milk from cows on recombinant growth hormone (cows on crack). </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This is a three hour fundraiser featuring the must see DVD Healing Cancer from the Inside Out and the Rave Diet Lifestyle book. Not only do these fundraiser premiums offer a real critique of current cancer care but they propose both in principle and thru the examples of people who have successfully checked cancer a plant based diet focus as the main approach to healing their cancer problem. The DVD critiques the current methodology of statistical sharing with respect to cancer survival and chemotherapy. It becomes clear that in many instances people are being misinformed. This is a truly compelling interview highlighting Mr Taubes’ very well referenced Good Calories Bad Calories. Mr Taubes has provided excellent documentation for the way that obesity has been dealt with throughout the last one hundred years in the Western world, starting with the emphasis on CHO to the latest craze around low fat diets. The myths and lack of real scientific documentation around the low fat approach to weight loss is highlighted and Mr Taubes shows the link between sugar, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. </itunes:summary>
